Beyond Central Park: Discovering NYC’s Only Indoor Petting Zoo
Ask any New York City parent where to find nature, and the answer is almost always the same: Central Park. While we adore the sprawling lawns of Sheep Meadow and the beauty of the Ramble, there is a limit to the wildlife experience there. You can watch a squirrel from a distance or spot a hawk in a tree, but for a child, the real magic happens when they can get up close.
When the weather turns chilly, the park becomes a bit too breezy, or your little one is asking to actually touch a bunny rather than just point at one, it’s time to head to the Upper East Side. Welcome to The Art Farm NYC, the city’s best-kept secret and home to Manhattan’s only indoor petting zoo.

A Rustic Escape on the Upper East Side
Stepping off 91st Street and into The Art Farm feels like a literal breath of fresh country air. We designed our space to be an urban oasis—a rustic, wood-clad sanctuary where the concrete jungle disappears. Here, the sounds of sirens are replaced by the soft clucking of chickens and the gentle scurrying of our resident animals.

Hands-On, Not Behind Glass
The biggest difference between a traditional zoo and our indoor farm is the glass—or rather, the lack of it. We believe that empathy is built through touch and interaction. In our petting zoo, children aren’t just observers; they are participants. Whether it’s feeling the unique coat of a chinchilla or watching a bearded dragon bask under its light, the experience is tactile, sensory, and deeply memorable.

Meet Our Furry (and Scaly) Residents
Our farm is home to many animals, each with their own personality. Children can spend time with our soft bunnies and guinea pigs, watch our tortoises move at their own pace, or say hello to our friendly birds. This diversity allows kids to learn that nature comes in all shapes, sizes, and textures—from feathers and fur to shells and scales.

Weather-Proof Nature Play
One of the hardest parts of raising a nature kid in NYC is the unpredictable weather. When it’s raining, snowing, or 90 degrees with humidity, the park isn’t always an option. Our indoor petting zoo offers a climate-controlled environment. It’s the perfect solution for high-energy afternoons when your kids need to reconnect with the world around them.

Lessons in Compassion and Care
Beyond the fun of the visit, there is a deeper mission. Every time a child learns to use “gentle hands” with a chick or helps feed a rabbit, they are practicing empathy. Our educators are always on hand to teach children about animal habitats, lifespans, and how we can all be better stewards of the living creatures in our city.
